BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Marquette women's soccer team needed overtime to defeat Xavier, 2-1. The win keeps the Golden Eagles undefeated as the nation's 14th ranked team (by Soccer America) improves to 5-0-1. Xavier falls to 2-3.
Alison Loughrin started the scoring with a goal in the 41st minute. She was assisted by Aubrey Trembley. The play started off a corner kick that was cleared away. Trembley played it back into the area towards Xavier goalkeeper Ashley Donaldson. Loughrin challenged Donaldson and was rewarded with the turnover in front of the Xavier goal for the easy score.
Xavier tied the match up in the 68th minute. Amber Silvis scored to knot the match at one and force extra time.
Defender Katie Kelly proved to have the leg from long distance again as she scored her second such goal of the season. The freshman had a free kick from 35 yards out that she played past Donaldson, who was moving off her line.
Despite the win, head coach Markus Roeders said his team still had work to do.
"It wasn't our best game of the year," Roeders said. "We didn't settle into that great of flow. But we came away with a win. We're finding ways to do that and that is important right now."
Marquette, playing its fourth match in eight days, went deep on its bench and got contributions from several players.
"It was great to see Kristie Matola give us some mintues today," Roeders said. "We're trying to create some depth and we played a few players in different positions, but we have a core group of players that needs to step up game-in, game-out. We need them to get their legs back to play when it's warm on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles will meet Miami (Fla.) on Sunday at 11 a.m. EST (11 a.m. CDT), who defeated Indiana in the second match of the tournament.
"We have a chance to play for a championship and that is always a positive thing." Roeders added.
