Senior Sarah Uyenishi will continue her soccer career professionally in Sweden, starting at the end of April.
The former Golden Eagles defensive standout will play with AIK Fotboll - one of the biggest and best-known clubs in Sweden.
After consistently winning the lower league for many years, the AIK club was elevated to the highest level in Sweden - Damallsvenskan - in 2005. They are the favorites to win the Division I North (NorrEttan) in 2006.
"I am very excited about the opportunity to continue my soccer career at such a competitive level." said Uyenishi. "I love to play and am not quite ready to be done, so it will be a great experience for me. Playing for such a great program like Marquette has definitely prepared me to take the next step. I have had outstanding coaching and the opportunity to play with talented, hard working, and dedicated players, and I think this will help tremendously. I feel very fortunate to have the chance to keep playing overseas."
Uyenishi's former head coach with the Golden Eagles was also both happy and proud of her.
"Our entire Marquette Soccer Program is excited that Sarah will continue her career in Sweden." head coach Markus Roeders stated. "She is taking a step forward with her playing career and she will experience a professional soccer environment unlike any level in this country. Although it will be an adjustment at first, Sarah is well-prepared, both mentally and physically, to excel at the next level. She enjoyed a wonderful career at Marquette and having played for a nationally-ranked program for the past four years should help her transition to European Soccer. We wish her much success."
