MILWAUKEE -- The 2006-07 Marquette women's basketball schedule was released today and it is, once again, a formidable one.
With a challenging out-of-conference slate and an always tough BIG EAST conference lineup. Marquette will face 17 opponents which earned a postseason bid a season ago.
The Golden Eagles out-of-conference slate features seven teams which reached the postseason last year (3 NCAA, 4 WNIT). Four of MU's 13 non-conference opponents won 20 games or more a season ago, while all 13 combined for 226 wins and a .582 winning percentage a season ago.
"We have a fantastic non-conference schedule that will prepare us for play in the BIG EAST." head coach Terri Mitchell said. "It is a challenge to compete in the best conference in the nation, day in and day out, but we look forward to the challenges of the upcoming season."
Additionally, two former national champions - Notre Dame and Connecticut - will play at the Al McGuire Center this season. The Fighting Irish come to Milwaukee on Jan. 23, while the Huskies visit on Feb. 3.
Marquette will kick off the 2006-07 regular season against Washington on Nov. 14. On Nov. 17, the Golden Eagles will travel to Charlottesville to face Virginia before returning home on Nov. 20 to host Wis.-Green Bay.
From Nov. 23-25, Marquette will take part in the US Virgin Islands Paradise Jam, held at the University of the Virgin Islands. MU will open with Western Michigan on Nov. 23, followed by matchups against Auburn and Xavier the next two days.
After returning home from the Virgin Islands, Marquette will travel across town to play Wis.-Milwaukee on Nov. 29. The Golden Eagles will play back-to-back road games at Rice on Dec. 3 and at Oakland on Dec. 9, before returning home for three straight games.
Gonzaga will visit the Al McGuire Center on Dec. 17, followed by Manhattan on Dec. 21 and Navy on Dec. 29. Marquette will conclude its out-of-conference schedule on Dec. 31 at South Dakota State.
The Golden Eagles begin BIG EAST play at home, when they host West Virginia on Dec. 6. Marquette will host the following teams in conference play: Syracuse (Jan. 3); Villanova (Jan. 13); Notre Dame (Jan. 23); Connecticut (Feb. 3); St. John's (Feb. 13); Louisville (Feb. 17); and USF (Feb. 24).
Marquette will play its first league road game on Jan. 6, when it travels to Chicago to face long-time rival DePaul. The Golden Eagles will travel to the following BIG EAST schools: Pittsburgh (Jan. 9); Providence (Jan. 20); Cincinnati (Jan. 27); Rutgers (Jan. 30); Georgetown (Feb. 10); Seton Hall (Feb. 20).
The regular season concludes with a game at St. John's on Feb. 26. For the second straight season, the Golden Eagles and Red Storm will face each other on both of their respective home courts.
From March 3-6, the 2007 BIG EAST Championship will be held at the Hartford Civic Center in Hartford, Conn. The top 12 teams of the 16 team conference from the regular season will qualify for conference tournament.
