MILWAUKEE - The no. 16/17 Marquette women's basketball team will look to bounce back after a tough overtime loss at Pittsburgh Saturday, Jan. 13, when it hosts Villanova at 7 p.m., at the Al McGuire Center.
Saturday's game is very special to the Golden Eagles for another reason because it is Marquette's second annual PINK OUT in support of breast cancer awareness. Fans are encouraged to wear pink and there will be pink Marquette women's basketball merchandise for sale at the game. All proceeds will go to the Milwaukee Breast and Cervical Cancer Awareness Program (MBCCAP). The first 2,000 fans will receive a free pink breast cancer awareness bracelet.
The Golden Eagles will be primed to avenge the 91-87 overtime loss at Pittsburgh on Jan. 9, that halted their school record 14-game win streak Saturday. The 91 points Pitt scored marked the most points Marquette has allowed all season.
Senior Christina Quaye led all scorers at Pitt with a career high 29 points. Sophomore Krystal Ellis, a four-time BIG EAST Honor Roll selection, followed with 27 points. All 27 of her points were scored in the second half and overtime. Quaye and Ellis have been a high octane offensive duo in BIG EAST play as they rank second and third in the conference in scoring with 22.3 and 22.0 ppg, respectively.
Villanova (7-9, 1-2 BIG EAST) who dropped its second conference game of the season Tuesday, shot just 29.4 percent from the floor in its 62-51 loss at Syracuse. While averaging just 58.3 ppg as a team, Villanova is at the bottom of the league in scoring offense, and second to last in field goal percentage making just 37.3 percent of its attempts. The Wildcats lone BIG EAST win came against West Virginia in double overtime, 70-64.
Jackie Adamshick leads the Wildcats with 15.6 ppg and 8.7 rpg. She scored her fifth 20+ point game of the season in the loss at Syracuse. Adamshick has led the Wildcats in scoring in 10 games this season.
It will be third all-time meeting between the Wildcats and the Golden Eagles in a series that commenced just last season. Villanova owns both victories over Marquette, the first in the regular season, 72-58, and one in the BIG EAST Conference Tournament, 64-44.
