AL McGUIRE CENTER - Entry 11 -- We are Family -- January 17, 2007
Gosh, it is already the middle of January and we have played five BIG EAST games! I still can't believe how fast the season goes.
Last week, we hit a bump in the road at Pittsburgh. It wasn't a bad loss, we took it to overtime and saw some great individual performances from some of our players, but it is still a loss. Good news was that we bounced back and beat Villanova the next Saturday! It was a great night all-around. We had our second annual PINK OUT to promote breast cancer awareness. There was a season high number of fans in attendance and we raised over $1,800 for the Milwaukee Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (MBCAP).
The first couple thousand fans that came to the game on Saturday were given pink breast cancer awareness bracelets and we sold MU pink ribbon Marquette women's basketball t-shirts. It is a reminder to all of us how important the cause is. It is a very special cause for our team. We did the Race for the Cure in September for many reasons, this team definitely takes it to heart and I think so do our fans. It was just so awesome to see all of the support for our team and women in our arena.
Not only did we earn a great win and have a fantastic fundraiser for a great cause, but it was also alumni weekend. I have been at Marquette for a long time, so every season I look forward to all of our alumni returning. We are so fortunate to have their support year after year. Saturday we were able to recognize their commitment to the program through the years at half time of the Villanova game while they supported us the entire game. They will always be a part of the Marquette family.
Everyone who came back this weekend had a great time. I think the best part about the weekend was just having them back and being able to catch up with one another. From our gathering Friday night, to cheering on the men's team Saturday morning and then winning our game later that day, it was all-around a wonderful weekend.
Well I can't end this entry without talking about my brother's visit this weekend and my favorite niece Kylie. They were in town for a father-daughter weekend. I am so blessed to not only have my extended family of our alumni around, but to have my brother an niece in town the same weekend.
Here is a funny story....
Kylie was afraid of the Eagle at the game, but me being the great aunt that I am, told her the Eagle was one of my friends and that it sleeps with a dolly every night just like she does. Kylie believed me and looks at me and says, "Okay Ter-Ter, I'll be brave."
In closing, we are all feeling good right now. We are ready to go to Providence this weekend and then have Notre Dame next week (live on CSTV)! Every game in the BIG EAST is a battle, but this team is special (I know, I have been saying that all season). We have had success, yet it have been challenged; two big reasons we really know who we are and where we want to go.
