Milwaukee - Marquette University continues to climb in the national men's golf ratings. According to Golfstat's latest Head-to-Head NCAA Division I standings released Wednesday, the Golden Eagles are ranked 54th in the nation following a third place showing last week at the Stockton Sports Commission Pacific Invitational.
"Our goal as a team was to get into the top 55 at the completion of the fall season," said Marquette head coach Tim Grogan. "Overall, it was a very solid fall season with two wins and two third-place finishes."
MU captured two titles in October, including the 20-team Xavier Invitational and the 11-team BIG EAST/MAC Challenge. In addition to the Pacific Invitational, the Golden Eagles also placed third at the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate to open the 2007-08 campaign.
Marquette closed the 2007 fall season by shooting a school-record 28-under par (836), according to Grogan, at the Pacific Invitational. Grogan said MU's average team score of 862.6 and Van Sickle's 69.67 scoring average are also school records, adding to the team's highlights this fall.
"This gives us some momentum going into the spring and puts us in a good position," said Grogan. "It should also make our guys work harder over the winter."
MU will open the spring season at the Ron Smith/USF Invitational to be held Feb. 29-March 1 at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Lake Jovita, Fla.
