MILWAUKEE -
Following a one-day break, the Marquette women's basketball team returns to action on Monday, Dec. 17, at the Al McGuire Center to host Big Ten Conference foe Northwestern. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. The Golden Eagles will look for their 50th win at the Al McGuire Center since the building opened on Jan. 4, 2004. Marquette is 49-7 all-time in "The Al."
WJYI 1340 AM will carry the game live with Kent Sommerfeld and Moya Baylis calling the action.
It's another Monday Madness, Giveaways Galore game. All season long prizes will be given out throughout each Monday night game. Prizes include an iPod, digital camera, a night out in Milwaukee, restaurant coupons, movie passes and much more.
The game against the Wildcats marks the second game of a three-game homestand. The Golden Eagles defeated Indiana State, 83-79, on Dec. 15. MU will play its final home game of the 2007 calendar year on Friday, Dec. 21, at Noon against Ark.-Pine Bluff.
In its last time out, Marquette (5-3) used a dominant inside game, where it saw 56 of its 83 points in the paint, to defeat Indiana State, 83-79. Four Golden Eagles scored in double figures with junior Krystal Ellis pacing MU with 21 points. The 21 points gave the Racine, Wis., native her 26th consecutive game of 10 or more points dating back to last season. Fellow classmate Kelly Lam notched a career-high 17 points connecting on 7-of-8 from the field, while freshman Angel Robinson also tallied a career-high with 13 points and dished out six assists. Senior Svetlana Kovalenko rounded out the quartet in double digits as she posted 12 points. Collectively, Marquette shot a season best 52.9 percent for the game.
Ellis leads the Golden Eagles with 20.6 points, while Kovalenko is averaging a near double double contributing 10.1 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. Robinson continues to have a productive freshman campaign giving Marquette 7.9 points, 3.8 assists and 3.0 steals per game. Her steals average ranks third in the BIG EAST.
The Wildcats (3-7) enter Monday's game having not played since a 66-51 loss to Seton Hall on Dec. 6. It was the second consecutive loss for Northwestern who dropped a 73-66 decision to Boston College on the first of the month.
Freshman Meshia Reed leads the Wildcats offensively, averaging 9.8 ppg. Junior transfer Ellen Jaeschke is second on the team in points, averaging 9.6 per contest and 5.8 rpg, which is second only to senior Nadia Bibbs' 7.5 rpg.
It will be the tenth all-time meeting between the Wildcats and the Golden Eagles in a series that began in 1977. Northwestern leads, 2-7. Marquette won the last game, 81-70, in Evanston on Nov. 23, 1997.
