SPRINGFIELD, MA. - The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in conjunction with the Harford Financial Services Group, Inc. announced, Thursday, Marquette sophomore Dominic James has been named a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award, presented each year to the nation's top point guard. He is one of a record 17 in the running for the honor that were chosen from a pool of over fifty candidates from NCAA Division I, II and III institutions.
A tie in the voting procedure created the final pool of 17 finalists, one more than the traditional 16. The pool is made up of 13 student-athletes from Division I and two each from Divisions II and III. Members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) from all three divisions made up the screening committees that selected the finalists.
James leads the Golden Eagles and as of Jan. 31 ranks sixth in the BIG EAST with 16.5 points per game. He is also fourth in the conference in steals per game (2.21) and seventh in assists (4.65) per game.
One other point guard from the BIG EAST, Levance Fields of Pittsburgh, was selected as a finalist.
Marquette fans nationwide have the opportunity to vote for James online at www.cousyaward.com and can also enter a drawing for two tickets to a 2007 Men's NCAA First, Second or Regional Round game. The "Fan-Vote" will be given to the top online vote getter, representing one vote to be cast by the Blue Ribbon committee. The committee is comprised of Hall of Fame members including Bob Cousy, Lute Olson and Jim Calhoun, college coaches from Divisions I, II and III, members of the media and additional college basketball experts and celebrities. The award winner will be announced at the NCAA Men's Final Four in Atlanta, Ga., on April 2.
