MILWAUKEE - Marquette women's soccer player junior Christy Zwolski scored five goals and added two assists to help the Illinios Eclipse to a national championship at the George F. Donnelly Cup, Jan. 13-15, in Tampa, Fla.
Illinois, representing Region II, won three games in as many days and allowed just one goal to capture the title. The Eclipse opened its run with a 3-0 win over Massachusetts where Zwolski tallied one assist. Next, in the Eclipse's 9-0 rout of North Texas, Zwolski registered four goals and one assist. She capped the weekend with one goal in the Eclipse's 3-1 win over Utah.
The team finished a perfect 3-0 and with a +12 goal differential, while Utah and Massachusetts each went 1-1-1 with Utah taking second with a +1 goal differential.
The Libertyville, Ill., native is the lone representative from Marquette on the team, however, in previous years, seniors Meghan Connelly and Lauren Weber, and junior Michelle Martin have all played for the Eclipse.
For the 2006 season, Zwolski was Marquette's second-leading scorer registering 19 points on seven goals and five assists. She broke a 13-year old Marquette record, tallying 10 points on four goals and two assists in the Golden Eagles' 9-0 victory over Sacred Heart on Aug. 27. Her four goals in that match also tied a school record. After three seasons, Zwolski stands seventh on the all-time career goals list with 18, and tied for ninth place on the all-time career points list with 44.
She is a two-time CoSIDA and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Five Team selection and NSCAA All-Central Region Honorable Mention selection. Zwolski was a BIG EAST Honorable Mention selection in 2005.
