SUGAR GROVE, Ill. - Marquette sophomore Mike Van Sickle finished in a tie for 17th place at the NCAA Central Regional Golf Championship, played at Rich Harvest Farms Golf Club in Sugar Grove, Ill. Van Sickle was Marquette's first ever participant in an NCAA post-season golf event.
Van Sickle came into the day in 11th place. High scores seemed to be the norm for the day, and the Marquette sophomore shot a final-round 78 to finish at nine-over, 225.
Starting on the back nine, Van Sickle stayed within contention going two-over through his first nine holes. He scored bogeys on the par-five 11th and on the par-four 15th.
Heading to the front nine for his last nine holes, he started with a bogey on hole no. 1. He recorded his only par of the day on the long par-five, second hole. A bogey on the fourth hole and a double bogey on the sixth hole moved him to five over on the day. He finished the round with a bogey on the ninth, his finishing hole.
The top 10 teams advanced from the regional to the NCAA Championships. Of the non-advancing teams and six individuals in the tournament, the top two moved on to the NCAA Championships. Despite having a very high finish, Van Sickle was out of contention to move on as an individual.
Tulsa won the team title at 31-over, 895. Alabama, Louisville, Lamar, Tennessee, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Michigan State, Texas and Minnesota, who won a playoff with Texas A&M, were the advancing teams. Golfers from the 17 other schools not advancing along with the six individuals were eligible to move on.
One of the golfers to move on was the co-champion of the Central Regional. Wisconsin's Dan Woltman finished at one-under, 215 to tie with Lamar's Dawie Van Der Walt. Western Illinois' Tim Streng finished third to also advance as an individual.
