MILWAUKEE - A night to remember!
As the sun broke through the clouds and laid its light over Valley Fields one could feel the special energy surrounding the people gathered to fight an evil in our world -- breast cancer!
The Marquette student-athletes showed their greatness as they embraced 55 area women all of whom came to Kick cancer. One by one they trickled in, some were dropped off and some arrived in a limousine. The stage was set for the event as we started of with a personal speech from Stan Anderson as he expressed his love for his sister and his gratitude to God as Cindy Ellis was standing strong, ready to play even though she had battled breast cancer.
Cindy, among other women, were all wearing pink where ready to fight.
After a brief warm up, the heroes (all women in our world) were divided into 10 teams ready to compete for fun, excitement and a great prize presented by Spa Roma!! Each team was complimented by a student-athlete and it was quickly realized that this is going to be an eventful night.
Ten games later, a sprained ankle, a black eye and a bloody face the winner was determined.
As the games were exciting and fun, what hit me the most was the karma surrounding the women. Some never played the game but yet had the courage to come out for the first time to play.
While watching I grabbed my video camera and walked around speaking individually to the heroes.
I could never understand the power of the disease until I saw the women and heard their stories. A single phone call from the doctor, a disease with the power to kill is what 1 out of 7 women face today. They stood there strong, telling their story of loved ones, friends, and family all battling breast cancer and cancer in general. Tears found their way on their faces as they could not hold back their emotions, their love, their pain and their hope.
I am still shaken as I write this recap! I want you to understand the power of change that we have. One simple event, two hours of your day makes a bigger difference than you could imagine.
I am proud of my non-profit organization, E.C. Miracles. I am proud of Marquette, I am proud of the women, our heroes, I am proud and honored to share time with the Soccer Moms.
As this was a special night I cannot wait for next week's event as more than half of them return for the monthly clinic. We are ready to kick cancer.
I want to thank, Cathy Shaw (my dear friend), all the Soccer Moms that came out, the student-athletes, Stan Anderson, Cindy Ellis, Visual Impression, Sobelman's, Spa Roma, Allegra Print and Imaging, The Ambassador Hotel, The Morning Blend, Halo, Stefans, Mo's Cucina and Lynne Herro Skin Care for making this a night to remember.
Treat all women with great respect and care. They are what make us complete!
Come back next week as the story about our heroes continues.
