COLUMBIA, MO. - Marquette senior Michaela Courtney finished second in her heat and third overall in the preliminaries of the women's 1,500m, Friday, as members of the men's and women's track & field teams competed at the NCAA Mid-East Regional, hosted by the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo. Her time of 4:19.06, a season best, propelled her into the final, scheduled Saturday at 4:30 p.m. CST. With a top-five finish, she will advance to the NCAA Championships.
"Michaela (Courtney) ran great and is peaking at the right time, just as she did at the end of last season," said head coach David Uhrich. "It will be exciting to see her compete in the final tomorrow."
Junior Cassie Peller also competed in the women's 1,500m, placing 14th overall in a time of 4:26.03. The top 12 in the field advanced to the final.
"Cassie (Peller) was right in her heat, but it went out little slower than she might have hoped," expressed Uhrich.
In the men's 1,500m, senior Tommy Schmitz placed 19th in a time of 3:55.19.
"Tommy (Schmitz) has been pushing really hard just to qualify," expressed Uhrich. "Getting the school record pushed him and he might have been a little flat towards the end of the season."
Competing in the men's 5,000m race was sophomore Scott Mueller. He placed 18th in a time of 14:33.98.
"Scott (Mueller) competed well, but like most championship races, it was very tactical, and he is learning," said Uhrich. "He is in very good shape, but is still getting used to the slow, tactical races. He is only a sophomore and we feel he has learned so much this season."
Junior Michael Boedeker placed 23rd in the discus with a toss of 158-8, and senior Damian Anisko finished 26th with a throw of 155-11. Anisko also competed in the hammer throw, finishing in 27th with a toss of 178-7.
"Both threw well, but the inexperience showed in this type of meet in this different atmosphere," Uhrich said.
