NORMAN, Okla. - Marquette sophomore Mike Van Sickle was named to the PING All-Midwest Region team by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Van Sickle was named all-region by virtue of his ranking in the Golfstat rankings. To be all-region, golfers ranked in the top 75 received spots on the all-region teams. Van Sickle finished the season ranked 39th in the Golfstat cup.
Van Sickle had a record-setting season for Marquette, becoming the school record holder in stroke average. He averaged 71.91 strokes per round to better the school record by 1.56 strokes. As a result, he has become MU's career scoring leader at 72.80, leading current teammate Ted Gray, who owns a 74.30 career scoring average.
Van Sickle open the spring portion of the season winning his first three tournaments. With two consecutive wins in February in Florida, he was named Golfweek Magazine's Collegiate Player of the Week. He recorded six top 10 finishes, including a second place finish in the BIG EAST, made the All Conference first team, and was nationally ranked in Golfweek collegiate formula. In addition, he finished 17th at the NCAA Central Regoinals, becoming the first Marquette golfer to play in an NCAA post-season event. He was also named co-recipient of the Frank Fuhrer III Award presented by the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association to the area's best golfer.
He is one of five BIG EAST members on the All-Midwest Region team and one of six an any all-region team. Members of the PING All-Region teams are automatically eligible for PING All-America honors, to be announced following the NCAA Division I Championships.
