MILWAUKEE - Senior forward Christy Zwolski is one of 36 amateur women's soccer players to be invited to participate in the United States Amateur Soccer Association (USASA) national camp. The camp will be held from June 30-July 2 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
"I'm very excited to be invited to this camp," said Zwolski. "I am looking forward to the great competition and the chance of getting selected to play on the international level. An opportunity to represent my state, club team and university at this stage is incredible. I know it will be a great experience."
Following the three-day camp, the participants will be narrowed down to an 18-player squad that will compete internationally.
Zwolski's invitation marks the third time in program history a Marquette soccer player has been invited to the national camp. Former players, Sarah Uyenishi and Lindsay Michuda were invited in 2005.
In order to be invited to the camp, a player must have been a member of a state select team that competed in a regional or national USASA select tournament. Zwolski's club team, Eclipse Select (Illinois), represented Region II and won the George F. Donnelly Cup - the USASA national championship - in January 2007. The Libertyville, Ill., native played a key role on the team's ride to the championship scoring five goals in three games of the tournament.
For the 2006 season, Zwolski was Marquette's second-leading scorer registering 19 points on seven goals and five assists. She broke a 13-year old Marquette record, tallying 10 points on four goals and two assists in the Golden Eagles' 9-0 victory over Sacred Heart on Aug. 27. Her four goals in that match also tied a school record. After three seasons, Zwolski stands seventh on the all-time career goals list with 18, and tied for ninth place on the all-time career points list with 44.
She is a two-time CoSIDA and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Five Team selection and NSCAA All-Central Region Honorable Mention selection. Zwolski earned BIG EAST Honorable Mention honors in 2005.
"This is a great opportunity for `Z'," exclaimed head coach Markus Roeders. "She loves the game, and trains and plays all the time. Her invitation to the camp is a reward for her soccer abilities and passion. We know she will represent herself and Marquette very well and embrace the environment. The competition at any national camp will be tough, but we know she will be confident and play at a high level. We are proud of her and wish her well."
