Milwaukee - Sophomore guard David Cubillan of the Marquette University men's basketball program has been named to the Venezuelan National Team and will represent his country at the upcoming FIBA Americas Championship 2007.
"We are really proud of David," head coach Tom Crean said. "The ability to represent his country in an international event means a great deal to him. We are excited to follow him and his team."
The 10-team event takes place at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, from August 22 until September 2. The top two finishers earn qualifying berths to the 2008 Olympics, while the third, fourth and fifth place squads qualify for the 12-team FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament (July 7-13, 2008).
The field consists of: United States, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Venezuela, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Cubillan and the rest of his team will open pool play against the USA on August 22. Venezuela and the USA are both in Group B, along with Brazil, Canada and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Cubillan saw action in 34 games as a freshman with the Golden Eagles in 2006-07, concluding the year averaging 5.5 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. He shot 42.5 percent from behind the 3-point line, knocking down 48-of-113 attempts.
The United States has claimed the championship in each of its three appearances (1992, 1999 and 2003). As the host nation in 2005, the USA did not participate. Venezuela's top finish came in 1992, when the squad was runner-up.
