No. 17 BYU Defeats Marquette, 3-0

IOWA CITY - The Marquette volleyball team fell to no. 17 BYU this evening, 3-0 (30-23, 30-27, 30-22), in the Carver-Hawkeye Arena in the opening game of the Hawkeye Challenge. The Golden Eagles are 0-1 on the season.
BYU earned the first win, 30-23, but the Golden Eagles got on the board first, jumping out to an early 5-2 lead. Senior outside hitter Kim Todd notched four kills in game one, including one to pull the Golden Eagles within three points, but BYU outscored Marquette 7-3 to take the victory. Despite notching 10 kills, the Golden Eagles were held to just a .031 hitting percentage to BYU's .200.
After trailing 26-20 in game two, Marquette went on a 7-3 run to bring the score 29-27 on a service ace by Todd, but would not score again as they fell 30-27. The Golden Eagles posted just seven kills as BYU slammed 15. Senior middle hitter Jenn Brown hit five kills and Todd for six, but BYU was led by senior outside hitter Chelsea Goodman who had a game-high 11 kills and posted a .135 hitting percentage.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game three on kills by junior outside hitter Ashlee Fisher, but BYU ran off a 13-2 run to take a 13-7 lead and would not trail again. MU pulled within seven points to hold off a match point from the Cougars, but a final kill from BYU finished the game as Marquette fell 30-22.
Todd finished the evening posting 10 kills and six digs. Junior libero Terri Angst notched 10 digs, while senior setter Katie Weidner dished out 22 assists. The Golden Eagles combined to hit just .076 percent, while BYU posted a .223 team hitting percentage.
The Cougars saw three players with double figure kills as Goodman, Erica Lott and Bryn Porter hit for 14, 11 and 10 kills respectively.
Marquette will have a day off before hitting the court on Sunday to face host team Iowa at 2 p.m.
