SEATTLE, Wash. - Junior defender Katie Kelly and junior transfer Becky Ryan represented Marquette when their club teams met in the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) U23 National Cup final Sunday, Aug. 5. Ryan's team, SoccerPlus (Connecticut), defeated Kelly's team, Kansas City Dynamos, 2-0, to capture the title at the Starfire Sports Complex in Seattle, Wash.
In the high scoring semifinal matches, the Dynamos routed Pinellas United (Florida), 11-0, while Soccer Plus downed ICSL All-Stars (California), 7-0.
It was the second time in three years Kelly's team has appeared in the National Cup final. Her U18 team took third place in 2005.
Ryan comes to Marquette from San Diego State where she was arguably the Aztecs most versatile player seeing action as a defender, midfielder and forward. Ryan totaled four points on one goal and two assists during her two seasons at SDSU.
Both Kelly and Ryan will return to Marquette and begin preparations for the 2007 season. Preseason training begins Monday, Aug. 13. The Golden Eagles open the 2007 season at Valley Fields on Friday, Aug. 31, when they host Washington.
