MILWAUKEE - Freshman Ashley Bares earned her second consecutive BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honor, while senior goalkeeper Laura Boyer was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll. It was announced by the league office on Monday.
Bares propelled No. 24/25/12 Marquette (8-0-1, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) over USF in the two teams BIG EAST opener with her picture-perfect goal in the 53rd minute. Bares leads Marquette and the BIG EAST with seven goals. Her goal against the Bulls was credited as the game winner, her third of the season. Although unable to convert any of her opportunities in Marquette's double overtime scoreless draw at Wis.-Milwaukee on Sunday, Bares fired off a season high eight shots, three of which were on target.
"Congrats to both and our team on a good weekend," said head coach Markus Roeders. "Ashley is becoming a dominant striker. Her goal against South Florida was terrific and she had multiple chances on Sunday night. Although only a freshman, she is comfortable on the field and willing to do the extra work for us in order to score. She has great potential and needs to keep striving for the next level."
Boyer, who has allowed only one goal this season, registered six saves for the weekend including a game high four during the 110 minutes of play against Wis.-Milwaukee. Against USF, Boyer played the entire 90 minutes and collected two saves. The shutouts of the Bulls and the Panthers were her fifth and sixth of the season. Boyer leads the league and stands third in the nation with a 0.11 goals against average. Her 0.955 save percentage is the best in the BIG EAST and ranks fourth in the nation. Boyer has 203 saves for her career to rank fourth all-time, and stands second all-time with 20 career shutouts. This is Boyer's second weekly honor of the season by the conference, eighth of her career.
"Laura continues to show why she is among the top goalkeepers in the country," added Roeders. "We have allowed one goal on the year and Laura has helped keep our defense organized and playing as a unit. When asked upon, she steps up and is ready to make a big save."
In the polls this week, Marquette came in at No. 25 in the Soccer America poll and held steady in the Soccer Buzz poll at No. 12. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll will be released Tuesday.
The Golden Eagles return to Valley Fields and resume BIG EAST play on Friday, Sept. 28, at 6 p.m., against Providence. The game is the first of a doubleheader with the MU men. The men's soccer team will play Louisville at 8 p.m.
