Women's Tennis Completes Day One at Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championship

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Marquette women's tennis team wrapped up play in the qualifying draw of the 2008 Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championship hosted by Michigan State University. MU's three representatives, freshman Paola Calderon, sophomore Christina Ruiz and senior Robin Metzler, each fell short in their pursuit of earning a berth in the main draw Thursday. Now, the trio will move to doubles competition witch begins Friday, and the Golden Eagles will be represented by sophomore Rachael Hush in the main draw which begins Saturday.
Calderon won her first match of the day defeating Minnesota's Magdelena Wiecha, 6-3, 7-6 (4), but fell short in her second match to Michigan's Michelle Sulahian, 7-5, 6-1.
Ruiz also won her first match of the day by taking down Martina Schnapp, 6-4, 6-2, but suffered a similar fate as Calderon fell to Anna Baronayte of Akron, 6-2, 6-2.
Metzler won her first set, 6-3, but couldn't hold on and fell 6-2, 6-1 in the remaining two sets to Toledo's Maha Guirguis.
