MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's basketball team earned a preseason ranking of No. 25 by Lindy's College Basketball. The Golden Eagles are one of six teams in the BIG EAST ranked in Lindy's Top 25. Connecticut was tabbed No. 1, followed by Rutgers at No. 5, Louisville at No. 9, Notre Dame at No. 20 and Pittsburgh at No. 24.
The Golden Eagles were also ranked No. 25 in Charlie Creme of ESPN.com Pre-, Pre-, Preseason Top 25 poll that was released in April.
The Golden Eagles are coming off a 21-14 overall record for the 2007-08 campaign that was capped by a season-high five game win streak and the WNIT Championship. Tournament MVP and First Team All-BIG EAST selection Krystal Ellis will return for her senior season to lead the Golden Eagles. Along with Ellis, Marquette returns four starters, including All-BIG EAST Freshman selection Angel Robinson and six letterwinners to the 2008-09 team. Four newcomers join the team in junior college transfers Breann Hill and Lauren Thomas-Johnson, and freshmen Georgie Jones and Jessica Pachko.
What Michelle Smith of Lindy's College Basketball had to say about the 2008-09 Golden Eagles
25. Marquette
WNIT was nice and all, but.......
The Good: The WNIT champs are looking to make NCAA Tournament noise this season, especially with the return of senior guard Krystal Ellis, the WNIT MVP. Ellis averaged 23.2 points during the WNIT.
Parting Shot: The last time Marquette had a long run in the WNIT, the Golden Eagles followed up with a school-record 26 wins and a second-round run in the NCAA Tournament. They can hope that history repeats.
