MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee native Sarina Simmons has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue her academic and athletic endeavors at Marquette University for the 2009-10 season announced head coach Terri Mitchell. With just the signing of Simmons, the Golden Eagles' '09 recruiting class is ranked No. 27 by All-Star Girls Report.
"Sarina is an outstanding athlete who can play a variety of positions," said head coach Terri Mitchell. "We love her versatility and passion on the court. We have known Sarina for a long time and are so excited that she is part of our family."
Simmons is a 6-1 forward out of Rufus King High School in Milwaukee, Wis. She is ranked as high as No. 8 by the Collegiate Girls Basketball Report and No. 47 by All-Star Girls Basketball Report. ESPN HoopGurlz lists her as No. 59 overall, but as the 14th best wing recruit of the 2009 class.
During her career at King, she has earned an honorable mention all-state accolades by both the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and the Associated Press, as well as first team All-City Conference and all-area honors each season.
She averaged 11.7 points per game as a junior while helping the Generals to a 20-2 overall record, and 12.3 points, 3.8 steals, and 3.7 blocks per game as a sophomore. While Simmons has been at Rufus King, the team has claimed three City Conference Championships and has not lost a home game.
"Sarina phenomenal student-athlete," added her former coach Alina Cunningham at Rufus King High School. She will contribute at Marquette a great deal. The Marquette program is already successful, but I believe Sarina will help take it to the next level. She has great upside, yet still has a lot to learn. She has an opportunity to really blossom while playing in the BIG EAST Conference and could be unstoppable. She will work hard, but keep a smile on her face all of the time."
