Milwaukee -
The No. 15/15 Marquette University men's basketball team wraps up a four-game homestand Tuesday night when the team hosts Texas Southern at 7 p.m. in the Bradley Center. The contest will be the second of four for the Golden Eagles as part of the 2008 Chicago Invitational. MU defeated Chicago State (Nov. 17) in its tournament opener and will travel to the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill., this weekend to conclude action in the eight-team event. Marquette will take on Northern Iowa Friday night before facing Dayton Saturday evening to wrap up play. The BIG EAST Network will produce Tuesday's outing against the Tigers with Lou Canellis (play-by-play) and Dave Kaplan (analyst) calling the action.
Offense Reaches Century Mark In Consecutive Games
A pair of free throws by junior Lazar Hayward in the closing moments of the team's 100-80 victory over Milwaukee allowed MU to reach the 100-point mark for the second-straight game.
The last time Marquette accomplished that feat came during the 1954-55 campaign when the squad defeated Bowling Green (101-56) and Detroit (100-81). That season, Marquette concluded the year averaging a school record 84.2 points per game.
MU downed Chicago State 106-87 on Nov. 17 to set a new Bradley Center record for points scored by Marquette or an opposing team. The previous mark of 105 came most recently in a win over Grambling on Dec. 28, 2002.
MU's current scoring average of 100.3 points ranks first in the BIG EAST Conference and fourth in the nation through games of Nov. 23.
Halftime Speeches Have MU Running Out Of Locker Room
Marquette head coach Buzz Williams may want to think about copywriting his halftime motivational speeches based on the team's response thus far in 2008-09.
In two of the three outings this season, the Golden Eagles have opened the second stanza with extending scoring runs to put the game out of reach.
Leading by eight points after 20 minutes in the season opener against Houston Baptist, MU began the second half with a 14-0 spurt to put the game out of reach. In possession of just a five-point advantage at the intermission versus Milwaukee, the squad rattled off 10-straight points to begin the half and was able to hold off any thoughts of a Panther comeback.
