MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's basketball team will face one of its toughest tasks of the season as it takes to the road to play at No. 1/2 Connecticut in Hartford at the XL Center. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. CT.
The game will be broadcast locally on Connecticut Public Television with Bob Picozzi and Meghan Culmo calling the action.
The meeting with the top-ranked Huskies marks the second time in program history the Golden Eagles have played the No. 1 team in the nation. The only other time MU has faced a No. 1 ranked team was in the 2004 NCAA Tournament when it played No. 1 Duke in the second round.
In their last time out, the Golden Eagles (14-11, 6-6 BIG EAST) downed Seton Hall, 88-71. The 88 points were a season high and was the first time MU scored 80 or more in BIG EAST play. Marquette had three players in double digits led by junior Krystal Ellis who scored 22. Ellis continues to lead Marquette with 19.0 ppg, an average that ranks second in the BIG EAST.
Junior Kelly Lam recorded her second double double of the season with a career-high 19 points and 10 boards. Eleven of those points were from the charity stripe. Freshman sharp shooter Courtney Weibel tallied her second consecutive game of 10-plus points with 15. All of Weibel's points came from long range.
Freshman Angel Robinson, who ranks second in the league in steals, chose to give rather than take against SHU as she dished out a collegiate-best 10 assists. Marquette registered 20 assists on 27 made field goals against the Pirates.
Connecticut (24-1, 11-1), who stands at the top of the BIG EAST standings, started the season off with a string of 21 consecutive wins until its loss to then-No.7/7 Rutgers, 73-71, on Feb. 5. Since that loss, the Huskies have won three straight.
Eight-time BIG EAST Freshman of the Week Maya Moore leads a trio of active Huskies in double figures with 17.5 ppg. Tina Charles follows with 14.5 ppg, a team high 9.8 rpg and a league best 50 blocks. Renee Montgomery is third on the team with 13.1 ppg.
UConn boasts the top scoring offense in the conference, (82.2 overall, 80.8 ppg in conference games) third in the nation, and the top scoring defense nation, allowing its opponents to score an average of 48.7 ppg, 54.3 ppg in league action.
Marquette will return home to host No. 23/18 Pittsburgh on Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Al McGuire Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. Saturday is Dollar Day! Tickets, hot dogs, soda and candy are only $1.
