The Marquette women's soccer team will host five matches and an indoor tournament as part of its spring schedule announced Friday by head coach Markus Roeders. The Golden Eagles will see action against the Horizon League, ACC, Atlantic-10, Big 10 and Sun Belt Conference teams as they prepare for the championship season in the fall.
"The team is excited to play games after working very hard over the past seven weeks," said Roeders. "Team training, individuals and conditioning have been excellent and we have seen improvements by all players. We will use the spring as a building block for the fall season and with 24 returning players, it is definitely a good time to build our squad for the upcoming year."
Marquette will commence the spring season with the fifth annual Marquette Indoor Tournament of Friends on March 8 at the Marquette Gym. The tournament features two Marquette teams, a Marquette alumni team, Wis.-Whitewater and Wis.-Oshkosh. The tournament games are small-sided; four field players and a goalkeeper. A Marquette team of current players has won the title each of the last four years.
"This weekend's 'Tournament of Friends' is a nice way to bridge the gap between the indoor and outdoor portion of the spring season. Our squad has a tournament title to defend but we hear that the alumni are better prepared than ever to claim the crown," said Roeders.
The Golden Eagles will move outdoors on March 29 as they host Wis.-Milwaukee, Green Bay and NCAA Tournament participant Loyola (Ill.) at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 3 p.m., respectively.
A trip to Durham, N.C. on Saturday, April 5, for games against two NCAA tournament teams from a season ago in Duke and UNC Greensboro is next on the schedule for Marquette.
The Golden Eagles will return to Valley Fields for the BIG EAST/Big Ten Showdown on Sunday, April 13. At 10:30 a.m. Marquette will play Northwestern. The Golden Eagles will face Wisconsin at 1:15 p.m.
The Golden Eagles will close out spring play in the "Sunshine State" in Boca Raton, Fla.,on Saturday, April 19, where they will play NCAA Tournament participant University of Miami, Florida Atlantic and Florida Gulf Coast.
"After the Easter break, we will have four consecutive weekends with play against many quality teams. Similar to the upcoming fall, we will measure ourselves against NCAA tournament teams from this past fall, some local rivals and several unfamiliar opponents. It will be an excellent opportunity to build team chemistry on the field, try various formations and build experience. The ladies are eager to compete which is great to see for us coaches," said Roeders.
