Game Two - BIG EAST Championship
XL Center - Hartford, Conn. - Marquette Postgame Quotes
No. 8 Marquette vs. No. 9 DePaul
Marquette Head Coach Terri Mitchell
Opening Statement
"Obviously we left it all on the court. We fought hard and came back from 10 down make it a game again. I'm so impressed with Allie Quigley and her senior leadership. You could just see how badly she wanted it. I'm not saying that we didn't, but that's what seniors do, they make a huge difference, and I think that our young team is understanding the level it takes, the competitiveness it takes, to succeed in the BIG EAST."
How well do you think that the teams succeed in attempting to take away the 3-point shot by DePaul?
"They (DePaul) set some excellent screens. I think that Allie moves really well without the ball, but they also got some really long rebounds that they kicked back out for 3's that we weren't defending against. I know that they got into foul trouble in the first half, but then Allie got back in and she hit a few. That's DePaul - they shoot 3's. We ran some screens, but I think that out lack of communication hurt us in the end.
Can you talk about not being able to stretch the lead during DePaul's first half foul trouble?
"We did have a lead, but we got into foul trouble, too. Our fouls piled up as well, theirs just happened earlier. We had a six point lead, then it was cut down to two, and at halftime it was tied, so we basically had to just play another game. I think there were a lot of emotional ups and downs in the game and I think that when we were down 10 and then came back, that says a lot about our future and the character of our team."
Can you talk about the rivalry between Marquette and DePaul?
"This is my 12th year of coaching, and one of the best games that I've been associated with is Marquette-DePaul, it's traditional on the men's side, it's traditional on the women's side. It doesn't matter what our records are, it doesn't matter what kind of season you're having, when the ball goes up between these two teams, it's going to be physical. Everyone is friends in the end, but when the ball goes up we are going to battle each other."
Can you talk about how there were four players in double-figures and how would you evaluate their play in the game?
"I think that any time I look back and we've had three or four in double-figures, we've won. Anytime it's just Krystal Ellis scoring, you never know where our team is going to go, so with distributing the ball, that's always a good thing. We were patient, we went into the paint much better. I think it was like our whole season. We had great moments, then we were down. We had great moments, then we were down. But every game we fight and every game we make it interesting."
