About the Course:
Palisades is a Jack Nicklaus designed course which opened in 2004 and achieved Audubon International Gold status in 2006. Shaped into the hills bordering Lake Wylie, water seldom comes into play on this par-72, 6,747-yard course.
Last Time Out:
Rain shortened the Marshall Invitational, held in Huntington, W.Va., to a one-day, 36-hole event. Marquette garnered its seventh top-five finish of 2007-08 by placing fourth in the 17-team field. Freshman Kelly Kretz posted the highest finish of his young career, placing second (-4) with a tournament-best 11 birdies, while junior Mike Van Sickle tied for fifth (-2).
About the Field:
The Palisades Collegiate will feature one of the stonger fields MU has gone up against this season, with co-host Charlotte previously holding the No. 1 ranking in the country following the fall season. The 49ers, who have won four tournaments already this year, are currently ranked No. 5 by Golfstat. Other top-ranked teams include No. 48 Augusta State and No. 72 Eastern Michigan with the Golden Eagles coming in at No. 69.
Ins & Outs:
For the second straight tournament, rain threatens to be a nuisance this week with a 30 percent chance of precipitation on both scheduled days of the event. If they are able to dodge the rain drops, the forecast should be great for golf with with temperatures expected to be in the mid- to upper 50s and lower 60s with winds under 10 mph.
