MILWAUKEE -- Dustin Schwab, who recently completed his junior season at Marquette University, defeated Ben Bendtsen III Thursday in the championship match of the Wisconsin State Golf Association's (WSGA) Match Play Championship Presented by TaylorMade.
Schwab won the event by knocking off the top-seeded player in the tournament by a final tally of 3 and 2. He was one of 64 players in the field to qualify, including six current Golden Eagles, three of whom advanced to the quarterfinals of the three-day event held June 10-12 at the Golf Courses of Lawonia's Links Course in Green Lake, Wis.
Four Marquette golfers - sophomores Matt Haase and Ben Sieg, junior Mike McDonald and Schwab - were among the 16 players to advance to Wednesday's third round of competition. Haase and McDonald were paired against each other, and Haase won 3 and 2 to eliminate his MU teammate.
Haase went on to defeat Tyler Obermueller (1 up) in the quarterfinal round, while Schwab disposed of Andy Hansen (4 and 3) and Sieg knocked off Bob Pyle (1 up). Haase was eliminated after losing to Bendtsen III (6 and 5) and Schwab edged Sieg (2 and 1) in the semifinal round.
