MILWAUKEE - Marquette track and field head coach Bert Rogers and head cross country and assistant track and field coach Mike Nelson have announced the signing of five athletes to National Letters of Intent for the upcoming 2008-09 season.
Runners Laurie Dalrymple (Elmhurst, Ill.) and Cathy Randle (Wauwatosa, Wis.) will compete with the Marquette cross country and track teams during the 2008-09 school year. David Carbajal (Crystal Lake, Ill.), Anthony Held (Elk River, Minn.), and Jessica Person (Milwaukee, Wis.) have also signed and will compete during the track season.
"We are very excited to add Laurie and Kathy to both our cross country and track squads," said Nelson. "In addition to the cross country season, the plan is to have Laurie run anywhere from the 3K to the 10K with Kathy contributing to our already strong middle distance group."
Dalrymple comes to Marquette after one season at Tulane University where she earned third-team All-Conference USA honors in cross country. She was one of only three Tulane runners to compete in all seven meets on the season while turning in season-best times of 17:36.55 in the 5K and 21:50.10 in the 6K. Dalrymple will have three years of eligibility remaining.
Randle attended Wauwatosa West High School and will come to the Golden Eagles after earning all-state mention this past season in the 800 meters. In the Division 1 WIAA finals, Randle turned in a season-best time of 2:16.65.
Carbajal joins Marquette to compete in the throwing events where Rogers thinks he can have a big impact.
"David came on really strong as a senior as he threw very well, recording some of the best distances in the state of Illinois last year," said Rogers. "We look for him to join the throwers and make a difference for us this year."
Held will compete in the 400 and 800 meter races, holding personal bests of 1:55.94 in the 800 and 49.2 in the 400.
"We put a lot of emphasis on middle distance and long sprints and Anthony will be a great addition to that unit," Rogers said. "He will be practicing with Eric Meissner, who had a tremendous year, and we will look for him to be a contributor and fill the spots vacated by some of our graduating seniors"
Person comes to Marquette from Rufus King High School where she was a sprinter and jumper for the Generals. At Marquette, coach Rogers sees her key events being the long jump and relay events.
"Jess had a rough last year but we look forward to having her healthy for the upcoming season," said Rogers. "She played point guard on King's basketball team and tweaked her knee during the season. It started to swell and the doctors eventually realized that she tore her ACL. It wasn't an awful tear so she should be back to full strength once the season starts. Her best times were from her junior year so we are looking forward to seeing what she can really do."
These five athletes will join 10 others to give the Golden Eagles 15 newcomers for the 2008-09 season.
The previously signed newcomers are Kate Horan (St. Louis, Mo.), Blake Johnson (Saline, Mich.), Patrick Keeley (St. Charles, Mo.), Courtney Kelly (North Bellmore, N.Y.), Bekki Misanin (Sterling, Va.), Jon Newman (Lisle, Ill.), Dominick Rosario (Richfield, Minn.), Bill Schlottke (Big Bend, Wis.), Keith Schueller (Germantown, Wis.), and Carly Windt (Greenfield, Wis.).
