MILWAUKEE - Mike Van Sickle, who will be entering his senior season with the Marquette University men's golf team in 2008-09, has been tabbed a Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).
In all, 96 players in NCAA Division I earned a spot on this year's list. Eleven of those players, including Van Sickle (No. 48), finished the 2007-08 season ranked in the top-50 by Golfweek, making the Marquette standout one of the best overall on the course, in addition to the classroom.
"Mike epitomizes what Marquette athletics and the NCAA are all about in that he is a true student-athlete," said head coach Tim Grogan. "By taking his education seriously, Mike puts himself in very elite company. He knows academics are important and still manages to play golf at a high level. For Mike to be able to manage his time and have success in classroom, while also being an all-american straight up, shows his commitment to being the best all-around student-athlete he can be."
A highly selective honor, NCAA Division I All-America Scholars must have a stroke average under 76.0. Van Sickle finished his junior season with a single-season school record 71.39 stroke average. Candidates must also maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.2, or higher, and be of high moral character.
To be considered, the player must be either a junior or senior in school, having completed at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70-percent of his team's competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championship.
Van Sickle has won six tournaments in his MU career. He led the nation in birdies in 2007-08 while being named PING All-America honorable mention for the second straight season.
