MILWAUKEE -- Marquette's Kelly Kretz will be among 155 participants to tee off Monday at Murphy Creek Golf Course in Aurora, Colo., site of the 2008 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. Kretz earned a spot in the field by winning a local qualifying tournament in June.
Monday and Tuesday will be stroke-play qualifying with the field being reduced to the lowest 64 players, who then advance to match play. The match play portion of the event will span four days, wrapping up Saturday, July 19, following six rounds at the par-71, 7,551-yard golf course -- the longest course in the 83-year history of the APL Championship.
Kretz, who will be entering his sophomore season with the defending BIG EAST Champions in 2008-09, will tee off Monday at 9:10 a.m. CT. He is paired with China's Minghao Wang and William Horschel of Gainsville, Fla., in the first round.
One of three golfers from Wisconsin to earn a spot in the event (Danny Behm, Tyler Obermueller), Kretz won the local qualifier held at Washington County Golf Course in Hartford, Wis., June 7-8.
