MILWAUKEE -- Marquette golfer Mike Van Sickle will be competing this week at the 50th Annual Porter Cup, which begins Wednesday at the Niagara Falls County Club. Van Sickle, who looks to continue playing well after tying for first place at last week's Southern Amateur Championship, is currently ranked No. 36 in the Scratch Players World Amateur Ranking.
The Porter Cup is one of the most competitive amateur tournaments in the world, according to the Scratch Players Group, which has the event ranked No. 6 overall on its list of top 30 amateur tournaments. The Southern Amateur was ranked No. 8 in the world in 2008.
Van Sickle lost the Southern Amateur title to Clemson's Kyle Stanley when Stanley, in sudden death, sank a 40-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole at Lake Nona Golf & Country Club in Orlando, Fla. Van Sickle, who will be entering his senior year at Marquette this fall, finished 14-under par with a four-round total of 274 (69-69-69-67).
Looking ahead, seven of the world's top 10 amateur players will participate in the Porter Cup, which will run July 23-26, including some of the nation's top collegiate golfers. First round tee times and pairings will be released Tuesday evening.
Past Porter Cup participants include PGA Tour players Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk, among others.
