Dear Supporters,
As you know, breast cancer is becoming more and more prevalent around our great country. It touches many lives, including those in our Marquette family. This year, Marquette is joining forces with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and their "PINK ZONE" initiative to raise breast cancer awareness, on the court, across campuses, in communities, and beyond.
Join our team on Sunday, February 15th as we take on West Virginia at 1 pm, for our fourth annual PINK OUT! We want to "Pack the Al" in PINK. Our team will be sporting pink uniforms and we hope that you will come with pink sweatshirts, shirts, pants, anything PINK, and help "Pack the Al" in PINK for our nationally televised game.
Along with the PINK ZONE initiative, we will once again be holding a "3-point Attack Against Breast Cancer" promotion. Enclosed with this letter is a pledge form, please donate if you are able. It's easy! You can pledge $5, $10, or any other amount for each MU 3-pointer made on February 15th. There is also an option to give a flat fee, if you would prefer. All donations that are made on February 15th will be divided between Milwaukee Breast and Cervical Cancer Awareness Program (MBCCAP) and the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.
MBCCAP is administered by the City of Milwaukee Health Department. It serves underinsured and uninsured women ages 35-64 by providing free breast and cervical cancer screenings. This year alone approximately 1,200 women have received services and in the past 15 years more than 26,000 women have been screened.
Kay Yow, North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach, is a past president and founding member of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), and a galvanizing voice for the Association. Yow lost her 20-year battle with breast cancer on January 24, 2009. In her 37 years as a head coach at the collegiate level, Yow is one of only six Division I head women's basketball mentors to achieve 700 career victories. The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund was announced on December 3, 2007, during the Jimmy V Classic. The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund, in partnership with The V Foundation for Cancer Research, will raise money in the fight against cancer. It was appropriate to announce this Fund during the Jimmy V Classic because of the connection between Jim Valvano, former North Carolina State men's head basketball coach who died of cancer in 1993, and Kay Yow.
