The No. 8/8 Marquette University men's basketball team puts its 10-game winning streak on the line when the squad hosts No. 25/23 Georgetown Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. CT in the Bradley Center. The Golden Eagles, undefeated in league play, are looking to also continue their current 14-game unbeaten streak at home, which dates back to last season. The BIG?EAST Network will feature the broadcast, with Lou Canellis (play-by-play) and Bob Wenzel (analyst) calling the action.
Coaches Vs. Cancer Suits & Sneakers Weekend Returns
Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers awareness weekend, a collaborative initiative of the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the American Cancer Society, is slated for the weekend of Jan. 30-Feb. 1.
Participating NABC-member college men's basketball coaches, including coach Williams and the Marquette staff, will wear sneakers instead of dress shoes with their usual game attire during Saturday's contest against Georgetown to demonstrate their support for the American Cancer Society and the fight against cancer. The Georgetown coaching staff will also participate.
Marquette's staff will be wearing the Converse Pro Leather Ox, which made its debut in 1976.
Winning Streak Extended With Notre Dame Victory
Marquette's current winning streak was extended to 10 games after the Golden Eagles were able to hold off Notre Dame and post a 71-64 road victory.
Marquette hasn't been defeated since falling to Tennessee on Dec. 16 and the 10-game run matches the team's most recent undefeated stretch since the 2002-03 Final Four campaign.
The Golden Eagles have enjoyed a winning streak that spanned at least eight games in five of the last eight seasons. During that time frame, MU has claimed as many as 12 consecutive wins. That undefeated run came during Conference USA play in the 2001-02 campaign in a season that was capped by an appearance in the NCAA East Regional.
Hayward Set To Join Exclusive Marquette Club
Marquette junior Lazar Hayward is just one point shy of becoming the 41st player in school history to net at least 1,000 career points.
The Buffalo, N.Y., native currently owns 999 points in 89 career games, which translates into a scoring average of 11.2 points per game. He will join current teammates Dominic James, Wesley Matthews and Jerel McNeal in the 1,000-point club.
Marquette entered the 2008-09 campaign as one of just two programs (North Dakota State) to feature a trio of 1,000-point scorers. Since the beginning of the season, UAB, North Carolina, Baylor, Green Bay, Oakland and Providence have all joined the group.
The Tarheels are the first to feature four players to reach the mark, but when Hayward nets his 327th point this year, Marquette will be the only other school to accomplish the feat.
Hayward will also become the 23rd player in MU history with over 1,000 career points and 500 rebounds, also joining Matthews and McNeal.
