Golden Eagles Dominate Stout, 118-71

The Marquette women's basketball team claimed a 118-71 exhibition win over UW-Stout Saturday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center, the first action of the season for the Golden Eagles. Freshman Sarina Simmons led all scorers with 18 points on the day.
For the game, Marquette shot 59.5 percent (47-of-79). All 10 active players chipped in points against the Blue Devils, including seven in double-digits. Simmons (19), Jocelyn Mellen (14), Lauren Thomas-Johnson (14), Janelle Harris (13), Angel Robinson (13), Jasmine Collins (13), and Georgie Jones (10) each totaled ten or more points. Robinson distributed the ball effectively registering 11 assists, while swiping four steals.
Stout opened scoring with a basket by senior Julia Hirssig, which also marked their lone lead of the game as Marquette led, 64-31 at the half. The Golden Eagles forced 18 turnovers in the first half, and 32 total.
Thomas-Johnson and Simmons led the first-half offensive effort for head coach Terri Mitchell's squad, scoring 10 points each. Marquette shot 67.6 percentage in the first half, including 54.5% from three-point range. Thomas-Johnson and junior Courtney Weibel knocked down two treys each in the first half, and Robinson and junior Tatiyiana McMorris added one each.
For Stout, Hirssig scored the first six points of the game for the visitors, and finished the first half with 10 points in 15 minutes of play. The Blue Devils shot 44% from the field in the first-half, including a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line. Hirssig finished the game with 16 points, teammate Kim Stokke registered a team-high 17 points and seven assists.
Mellen pushed the Golden Eagles over the 100 point mark, scoring a second-half layup to put MU ahead 101-55. It was the first since a knee injury against Gonzaga on Nov. 28, 2008 sidelined her for the 2008-09 season.
Simmons, a Milwaukee, Wis. native, showed flashes of what to expect during her career, tallying 19 points in 21 minutes.
Marquette closes out the exhibition portion of its schedule against Beloit on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Al McGuire Center.
