MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's basketball team dropped a 56-49 decision to Wisconsin Friday evening at the Al McGuire Center, failing to capitalize on opportunities late in the game.
The Golden Eagles (6-3) had cut the deficit to three points at 52-49 after trailing by as many as eight, but were unable to convert on a Lauren Thomas-Johnson steal with under 40 seconds remaining.
Out of an ensuing timeout with MU trailing 52-49, junior guard Tatiyiana McMorris in-bounded the ball to Paige Fiedorowicz under the basket. Fiedorowicz missed the contested layup and the Badgers made their last four free throws to close out the game.
Marquette shot 42.9 percent (9-of-21) from the free throw line in the contest and missed 11 of its 19 free throws in the second half. The Golden Eagles also committed 11 turnovers in the second after giving away only three in the first.
Senior Angel Robinson led MU with nine points and five assists, while Jessica Pachko and Janelle Harris each added seven rebounds.
Junior guard Alyssa Karel led the Badgers with a season-high 23 points, who improves to 8-2 on the season.
Wisconsin's win over Marquette improves its all-time record against the Golden Eagles to 10-7 overall, including wins in the last two contests.
After trailing 23-20 at the half, the Badgers took a lead out of the intermission with four-straight points and never looked back. Marquette regained the lead only briefly in the second half at 32-31 on a free throw by freshman Sarina Simmons.
Trailing 12-8 early in the first half, the Golden Eagles used a 9-0 run to build a 17-12 advantage.
Karel led Wisconsin in the first half with 10 points and was one of only three Badgers to score a point in the frame, joining Lin Zastrow and Jade Davis.
The Badgers were able to make four of 12 shots from long range in the first half, while MU missed all four of its attempts from deep. Karel and Davis each had two treys for UW in the first.
The Golden Eagles forced 10 turnovers in the first half, scoring eight points off the extra possessions.
Marquette returns to action Sunday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center against Robert Morris at 2 p.m.
