Volleyball Finishes First Event of 2009 Spring Campaign

AURORA, Ill. -- The Marquette University women's volleyball team concluded its first event of the 2009 spring campaign at the Great Lakes Center Collegiate Invitational, winning two of five matches on the day.
"They definitely got better as the day went along," assistant coach Michaela Franklin said. "With the new coaching staff, it was a new experience for them and they were nervous, but as the day moved along they progressed and got better. They competed well and were fun to watch."
In the first match of the morning, Marquette lost to Kansas State, 2-0 before moving on to play fellow BIG EAST rival Pittsburgh in its second match of the day, dropping a 2-1 decision.
After losing its first two matches, the Golden Eagles rallied to win their next two. The first win was against Loyola (Ill.) to finish seventh in bracket "B," while the second victory was achieved over Indiana State in the second flight of the playoff divisions.
Marquette capped the day off with a 2-0 loss to Wake Forest in 15-12, 15-13 fashion.
The Golden Eagles return to action April 4 at Loyola (Ill.) University's Three WIse Men Tournament before finishing off the spring season with a cross-town match against UW-Milwaukee on April 9.
