The No. 13/15 Marquette University men's basketball team wraps up the regular season portion of its schedule Saturday afternoon when the squad entertains No. 25/25 Syracuse on Senior Day. MU's four-member senior class of Dwight Burke, Dominic James, Wesley Matthews and Jerel McNeal will be recognized throughout the afternoon, highlighted by a postgame ceremony. The matchup will be featured as the BIG EAST Network Game of the Week, with Mike Gleason (play-by-play) and Mike Kelley (analyst) calling the action. Marquette Athletics and Second Harvest have partnered to host a food drive at the game. Fans are encouraged to bring canned food items or cash donations to help fight hunger in Milwaukee.
Golden Eagles Claim No. 5 Seed In BIG EAST Tourney
Marquette has claimed the No. 5 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Conference Championship, regardless of the team's result Saturday afternoon against Syracuse.
Should the Golden Eagles defeat the Orange and improve to 13-5, Villanova earns the tiebreaker for the fourth seed. The two teams split the season series, but the Wildcats' victory over Pittsburgh earlier this year gives Villanova the edge in the league tiebreaker system.
MU will face the winner of the No.12/13 matchup on Wednesday, March 11 at 2 p.m. ET in Madison Square Garden. Potential opponents include Notre Dame, Seton Hall, St. John's and Georgetown.
Senior Class Leaves With Few Peers On The Court
The contributions, both on and off the court, of the 2008-09 senior class are difficult to accurately measure.
Dwight Burke, Dominic James, Wesley Matthews and Jerel McNeal's accomplishments on the court have been well documented, but the group's impact on campus and in the greater Milwaukee community is just as important.
The group has the program poised for its fourth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance, a feat that hasn't been matched in 30 years. MU is one of just two league schools (Pittsburgh) to win at least 10 BIG EAST games each of the last four campaigns and the program's all-time record book has their names scattered throughout multiple categories.
