MILWAUKEE-- After winning two of five matches at the Great Lakes Center (GLC) Collegiate Invitational last weekend, the Marquette University women's volleyball team continues the 2009 spring campaign Saturday at the Three Wise Men Tournament, hosted by Loyola (Ill.) University at the Gentile Center.
"The tournament this weekend is another great opportunity for us to sharpen our competitive edge," said head coach Bond Shymansky. "Our offensive system is starting to take shape, even though we still need a few more front row hitters to round out our roster. Spring tournaments are the time to work, and let it all hang out. We can afford to learn from mistakes right now, instead of in the fall."
Marquette is one of the 16 teams that will compete in four separate pools at the event. The Golden Eagles will kick off play with two sets against Eastern Illinois University at 9:15 a.m., and then continue competition with two sets against UW-Milwaukee at 10:45 a.m. and Northern Illinois at 12:15 p.m.
In the afternoon session, beginning at 1:30 p.m., Marquette will go on to play three 30 minute sets against similar finishers from the three other pools.
The Golden Eagles are returning after last weekend's GLC Collegiate Invitational in which Shymansky coached the squad for the first time in intercollegiate action, defeating Indiana State and Loyola (Ill.).
"Our opening weekend play at the Great Lakes Center was up and down," Shymansky said. "We are still looking for consistency every play from our team, but we like the progress we are making thus far. We have a few leaders emerging within the team, and some players developing in new positions with new techniques. It is a very exciting time for our whole team right now."
MU will close out the spring season with a match against UW-Milwaukee at the Klotsche Center on April 9.
