Senior forward Lazar Hayward of the Marquette University men's basketball team has received an invitation to participate in the 2009 USA Basketball Men's World University Games Team training camp June 16-24 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The eventual 12-member USA team will be announced prior to the team's departure for Serbia on June 25. The invitations to attend the USA Basketball training camp were extended by the USA Basketball Men's Junior National Team Committee. Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan will lead the team in Serbia.
The World University Games is organized by the International University Sports Federation and held every other year. The 2009 men's basketball competition will take place July 2-12 in Belgrade, Serbia, with 24 men's teams expected to compete for gold. Eligible athletes for the USA team must be currently enrolled in a college or university and have remaining NCAA athletic eligibility.
Hayward, who averaged 16.3 points and 8.6 rebounds per game in 2008-09, could become the first-ever Marquette player to compete in the World University Games. The Buffalo, N.Y., native would be the 14th MU player to represent the University with USA Basketball. Others include Jim Chones (1971, Pan American Games), Maurice Lucas (1973, World Youth Games), Glenn "Doc" Rivers (1982, FIBA World Championship) and Dwyane Wade (2004 & 2008, Olympics).
"I am excited about the opportunity," Hayward said. "It's an honor to even have my name included with the group USA Basketball has selected to try out for the team. I am really looking forward to the chance to make the team and the opportunity to represent Marquette."
