MILWAUKEE-- Marquette University head volleyball coach Bond Shymansky has announced the signing of defensive specialist Kelsey Warner to a National Letter of Intent, as well as defensive specialist Ellie Hovda and setter Shelly Mueller to Acceptance of Admission forms.
"Kelsey is a dynamic and aggressive libero and will add a tremendous amount of skill and tenacity to our back row," Shymansky said. "Kesley's determination is the foundation of her game. She adds great passing and quickness while combining gutsy defense and explosive movement to our squad. The whole package makes her a player that was nationally recruited and recognized as one of the best liberos in her class."
Warner comes to MU after an impressive prep career at Folsom High School in Folsom, Calif. While in high school, Warner earned four letters in volleyball, serving as team captain as a junior and senior and led her school to the California Interscholastic Federation playoffs all four seasons. As a senior she was named to the San Joaquin Valley All-Metro team, the Optimist All-Star Senior Team, in addition to being voted team MVP and given the Stan Harms Award for "being dependable on and off the field." In her final three seasons at Folsom, she was selected to the Delta River All-League squad.
The 5-foot-5 Warner also played with the Northern California Volleyball Club (2006-09) and helped the squad qualify three times in the open division for the Junior Olympics. Her NCVC 18's Moxie squad is currently ranked No. 2 in the country by prepvolleyball.com, while nine of her former teammates are also playing NCAA Division I volleyball.
Hovda is a 5-foot-7 defensive specialist from Wausau, Wis., who excelled at Wausau East High School. Mueller, a 5-foot-9 setter from Mount Prospect, Ill., looks to back up junior transfer Nikki Klingsporn after earning four letters at John Hersey High School.
"Ellie is an energetic team player with a solid back row skill base. She has made herself an indispensable part of her high school team, and we are expecting her to take on those same qualities while at Marquette. Shelly is a disciplined and hard working setter who will add depth and skill for us at the setter position. She is a great person and player and will also be a great addition to our squad for the fall."
