MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's basketball team will close out the regular season and celebrate its senior class Monday, March 1 as it hosts Cincinnati at the Al McGuire Center. The locally televised 7 p.m. tip-off can be seen live on Sports 32 with Kareeda Chones-Aguam and Steve "The Homer" True calling the action. It can also be heard via the airwaves on 1340 AM WJYI with Kent Sommerfeld on the call.
The Golden Eagles look to close out the regular season the same way it started it, with a victory after its fifth straight setback, 69-56, at No. 8/7 West Virginia. Marquette will honor its senior class of Janelle Harris and Lauren Thomas-Johnson following the game for its annual senior night ceremony.
Marquette (14-14 overall, 5-10 BIG EAST) is currently tied for 11th place with Pittsburgh and Louisville, but owns a tie breaker over the Panthers thanks to a win earlier in the season. A win Monday night for Marquette, and losses for Syracuse, Louisville and USF could give Marquette as high as a No. 10 seed in the BIG EAST Conference Tournament which begins Friday, March 5, at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn.
Meanwhile, Cincinnati stands 14th in the league with a 4-11 conference record (11-16 overall). The Bearcats have lost their last four games entering Monday night's regular-season finale. Kahla Roudebush leads Cincinnati with 13.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. The Bearcats have two other players averaging double-figure points in Shareese Ulis (11.4) and Michelle Jones (10.4). Overall, the Bearcats have averaged 56.4 points per game this season.
Cincinnati and Marquette will meet for the 30th time in a series that began in 1992 as members of the Great Midwest Conference. The Golden Eagles own the series advantage, 20-9, and have claimed the last four of the last five wins. The Bearcats and the Golden Eagles met twice last season, once during the regular season and once in the first round of BIG EAST tournament with Cincinnati claiming the last win, 60-54 in overtime. Marquette's last four victories have been by an average of 12 points.
