MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's volleyball team used its second weekend of competition in the spring season to defeat Iowa, 3-2, Saturday at the Al McGuire Center.
"Another week concludes in our spring season and we feel like its another step forward for our program and our team," head coach Bond Shymansky said. "We passed and served much better today, but there is still much room for improvement. We're really working hard with our younger players to get them more experience and our older players continue to be the rock-steady portion of our program."
After taking the first two sets of the match by scores of 25-18 and 25-16, respectively, the Golden Eagles were unable to hold off the Hawkeyes in the third set and dropped a 26-24 decision. MU clinched the match victory in the fourth set with a 25-13 win before a fifth set was played for the extra repetition. Marquette lost 15-11 in the final set.
"Our competitive composure has gotten a lot better and we don't get down when things are bad and we don't freak out when things get tough. We had some of those issues last year, so our maturity keeps increasing. As a result, we just find ways to fight back when we are losing and find ways to finish when we are winning," said Shymansky.
The Golden Eagles return to action Sat., April 3, when they welcome Green Bay, Milwaukee, Northwestern and Illinois-Chicago to the Al McGuire Center. All matches are open to the public and free to attend. Doors will open at 8 a.m. for MU's first match against Green Bay scheduled for 9 a.m. MU will also play UIC at 10:15 a.m., Northwestern at 12:30 p.m. and Milwaukee at 3 p.m.
