MILWAUKEE - The 2009-10 season for the Marquette women's basketball team came to a close Tuesday night as the team held its annual end-of-the-season senior celebration at the Al McGuire Center. Over 100 family members, friends, supporters and administrators gathered to celebrate the season and the careers of seniors Janelle Harris and Lauren Thomas-Johnson.
Seven awards were handed out Tuesday evening with junior guard Angel Robinson winning a team-high three honors, including the team's most valuable performer award.
The Golden Eagles finished the season 17-16 overall, 6-10 in BIG EAST play, and advanced to the second round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). The WNIT berth marked the eighth consecutive postseason appearance, 15th in program history and 12th since head coach Terri Mitchell began her tenure at Marquette.
Robinson was tabbed the team's most valuable player and most valuable offensive player, while also taking home shared honors for the team's leadership award. It is the second consecutive season she has been given all three. Robinson was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team after leading the team with 11.9 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game, including 12.4 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists per contest in BIG EAST games. Robinson was the only Golden Eagle to start in all 33 games.
Thomas-Johnson and Harris shared most Valuable defensive player honors, marking the second time of Harris' career she has earned the honor. Junior Courtney Weibel was tabbed the Golden Eagles' most outstanding teammate for the second time of her career. Weibel previously won the outstanding teammate award following the 2007-08 season.
Junior Tatiyiana McMorris was awarded the tenacity award for her hard work and dedication during practice and games for the second consecutive season.
Rounding out the awards were Karen Kindel and Bob Hussinger, loyal fans and supporters of Marquette Athletics, who were selected as recipients of the Charles "Gordie" Baker Exceptional Fan award.
