MILWAUKEE - The NCAA recently honored three Marquette University athletic programs with NCAA Public Recognition Awards for their multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR). Representing Marquette were the men's golf, women's soccer and women's tennis teams.
"We would like to congratulate the Marquette student-athletes who have worked hard to earn this well-deserved recognition from the NCAA," Director of Athletics Steve Cottingham said. "Their diligence in the classroom for the multi-year APR scores shows the hard work that the student-athletes have put in with their coaches and the academic support staff on a daily basis. It is a great honor, in which they should all take pride."
These awards are given each year to teams scoring in the top-10 percent of the APR in their respective sports. Every team that received an award this season posted APR scores between 978-1,000.
It is the fourth-consecutive honor for the men's golf team, having earned the award from 2007-10. It is also the first time that the women's soccer and tennis teams have received the award.
Overall 841 teams were publicly recognized this year which amounted to only 13.4 percent of the 6,297 eligible Division I teams.
By measuring eligibility and retention each semester, the APR provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport.
The BIG EAST Conference had the third-most high-performing teams honored (70), trailing only the Ivy (135) and Patriot Leagues (90).
The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09.
