MILWAUKEE - Freshman forward Katherine Plouffe was named the BIG EAST Conference Freshman of the Week announced Monday by league officials. It is Plouffe's first BIG EAST weekly honor of her career.
The rookie from Edmonton, Alberta averaged 13.0 points and 6.5 rebounds in a 2-0 week for Marquette en route to the Sun and Fun Classic Championship; MU's first regular-season tournament title since 2006.
Plouffe scored a team-high 14 points and added seven rebounds in the Golden Eagles' win over FIU on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor, and scored 12 points and pulled down six rebounds against Louisiana Tech in the title game. Plouffe connected on 5-of-7 field goal attempts (71.4 percent) and added a career best three assists against the Lady Techsters.
Plouffe is the third player in program history to earn BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors. Both Krystal Ellis and Angel Robinson did so during the 2005-06 and 2007-08 seasons, respectively.
The Golden Eagles resume BIG EAST play at the Al McGuire Center Wednesday, Jan. 5 against No. 16/14 Notre Dame. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
