MILWAUKEE - Four members of the Marquette University women's soccer team were recognized for their hard work and dedication on the field as well as in the classroom recently as selections to the 2010 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Scholar All-America and All-Central Region Teams.
Junior Kerry McBride was a NSCAA Second Team Scholar All-America selection, while seniors Lauren Thut and Rosie Malone-Povolny earned third team honors. All three student-athletes as well as junior goalkeeper Natalie Kulla were also named to the 2010 NSCAA Scholar All-Central Region First team.
"All four ladies are shining examples of how our players excel in the classroom and on the field," said head coach Markus Roeders. "They are highly motivated to be the best they can be with their school work and how they compete on the field. They are outstanding people and we are very proud of their accomplishments."
McBride, a civil engineering major with a 3.58 grade point average, anchored Marquette's back line as its sweeper in 2010. She helped one of the best defenses in the BIG EAST allow 22 goals overall and just eight in BIG EAST play. McBride limited the opposition to just 7.7 shots on goal per game, including just 3.5 shots on goal in BIG EAST play. It is McBride's first NSCAA Scholar All-America and All-Region selection of her career.
Malone-Povolny, a double major in middle/secondary education and writing intensive English with a 3.82 grade point average, was an integral member of the Golden Eagles midfield throughout her career. Malone-Povolny finished her senior season with a career-best 11 points on four goals and three assists. It is Malone-Povolny's first NSCAA Scholar All-America selection of her career. Malone-Povolny earned NSCAA Scholar All-Central Region Third Team honors following the 2009 season.
Thut, an education major with a 3.31 grade point average, was Marquette's secret weapon on offense in 2009. Thut was fourth on the team in points with a career-best 15 on one goal and a career-high 13 assists. Her 13 assists stand tied for second place on MU's single-season assists list. It is Thut's first NSCAA Scholar All-America selection of her career.
Kulla, a civil engineering major, holds a 3.53 grade point average. She is Marquette's all-time shutouts leader with 32 for her career, including 10 in 2010. Kulla has played every minute of every match in the last 47 matches dating back to the 2009 season. It is also Kulla's first scholar all-region selection by the NSCAA.
Collectively, the Golden Eagles earned a team cumulative grade point average of 3.42 for the 2009-10 academic year and were honored with the program's 15th straight NSCAA College Team Academic Award.
Marquette finished the 2010 season 16-5-3 overall, and ranked No. 12 by the NSCAA and No. 9 by Soccer America. The Golden Eagles won the BIG EAST American Division Title for the second straight season with a perfect 11-0-0 record, and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship.
