MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's volleyball team will travel to Kalamazoo, Mich., on Tuesday, Oct. 18 for a non-conference tilt against Western Michigan at 6 p.m. CT at Read Fieldhouse.
Marquette is 16-5 overall and has earned victories in seven of its last eight matches. The Golden Eagles fell 3-0 at Middle Tennessee State on Oct. 11, before rebounding with a 3 -1 win over Syracuse on Saturday to remain atop the BIG EAST standings with a perfect 6-0 record.
Freshman setter Chelsea Heier was named BIG EAST Conference Freshman of the Week for the second consecutive week and third time this season, league office announced Monday. Heier recorded 57 assists in the win over the Orange to match her career high and collected 10 digs for her third double-double of the season.
Junior middle hitter Danielle Carlson hit .467 with 16 kills and tied her career high with six digs in MU's four set victory.
Senior Ciara Jones added to her team-best 279 kills on Saturday with 17 tallies while hitting .314. Jones is averaging 3.72 kills per set and is 33 kills shy of 1,000 for her career.
Western Michigan (16-5, 6-2 Mid-American Conference) is coming off consecutive 3-0 sweeps over Buffalo and Akron last weekend. Junior middle blocker Jessica Brown leads the Broncos with 3.51 points per set. Brown tallied her 1,000th career kill in Western Michigan's win at Akron on Oct. 16.
Senior Ashley Turnage is hitting .324 on the season to pace WMU, while teammate Terin Norris has posted an 11.56 assist per set average.
Western Michigan is 6-1 this season at Read Fieldhouse, with its only defeat coming on Sept. 2 against North Carolina.
Marquette is ranked 37th in the first NCAA Ratings Percentage Index rankings of 2011, while the Broncos check in at No. 38. MU was No. 47 in the final 2010 standings.
