Tony Benford, a member of the Marquette University men's basketball staff for each of the past three seasons, has been promoted to associate head coach with the Golden Eagles, head coach Buzz Williams announced Thursday afternoon.
Benford is regarded as one of the top recruiters in the country and is ranked among the nation's top assistant coaches by several media outlets. He has helped assemble two nationally ranked recruiting classes in three seasons at Marquette, including a 2009 group rated by one publication as the best in the country.
"Of everyone I have worked with throughout my career, Tony's professionalism and work ethic are as good as I have seen," Williams said. "He has had an incredible impact on our program, on and off the floor, and he is more than deserving of this promotion. His character is above reproach and I am genuinely thankful for his contributions thus far and excited about his future."
With Marquette's participation in the NCAA Tournament in 2011, Benford has now helped guide a team to postseason play on 13 occasions in his coaching career. He has also made stops at New Mexico (1992-98), Arizona State (1998-06), UTEP (2006) and Nebraska (2006-08).
