With anticipation growing on each passing day, "Championship Friday" has finally arrived for the Session II campers.
The importance of the event can't be overestimated and trying to describe its magnitude wouldn't do it justice, especially considering the amount of pride the staff puts into the competition. All that needs to be known, ,however, is that lives will be changed forever and heroes will have the mere mention of their names echo through the rafters.
The campers got a jump start on Friday's action with a historic victory in Thursday's Golden Eagle Challenge (G.E.C.). Faced with the prospect of not winning a G.E.C. title during the week for the first time in the history of history, the Olympians reached deep within their souls to post an unbelievable win. Matched up against their nemesis, the Former Golden Eagles (F.G.E.), the youngsters quickly fell behind 2-0 to the trio of Chris Grimm, Ousmane Barro and Dwight Burke. Emotions were running high at this point and the situation wasn't helped by the constant motivating (or taunting) being conducted by certain senior members of the camp staff. Against all odds, the Olympians (Eagan Reams, Emmett Loew, Carter Wells) knotted the score at 2-2 to force a deciding game five. With each team in possession of four baskets in the final stanza, the fundamentally-sound Olympians banked in the game winner for the miracle finish. The celebration that followed would make the classy citizens of Vancouver, whose character was revealed following the Canucks Stanly Cub playoff loss, reconsider their approach several weeks ago.
Thursday's free throw winners were Nick Ferge (USA) and Troy Thompsen (Dallas). Campers of the day were Mikey Florsheim (Venezuela), William Skowronski (Butler), Jon Schmus (UConn) and Connor Jackson (Boston).
