MILWAUKEE - Head coach Bert Rogers and the Marquette University men's and women's track and field programs have announced their schedules for the 2012-13 indoor and outdoor seasons.
The Golden Eagles will compete in 15 of the same meets from 2011-12 and will once again host a pair of events at Valley Fields, the Milwaukee Dual Meet on April 5 and the Marquette Invitational on April 26.
"I am happy with how the schedule is laid out for us this year," Rogers said. "It is very similar to last year's and I am very pleased with how everything worked out."
Marquette will begin its indoor campaign on Dec. 7 at the Blue and Gold Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind. for the sixth consecutive season. Three Golden Eagles recorded meet titles at the Blue and Gold Invitational last season, including returning student-athletes Kate Hein and Michael Saindon. Marquette will compete at Notre Dame a total of three times during the 2013 indoor campaign.
The squads will resume competition after winter break at the Badger Classic on Jan. 12 at The Shell in Madison, Wis. MU had a strong showing last year at the Badger Classic, notching over 30 personal bests.
The Golden Eagles will close out the month of January at the Bill Bergan Invitational in Ames, Iowa on Jan. 25-26 before heading back to Notre Dame for the prestigious Meyo Invitational on Feb. 1-2.
A trip to Allendale, Mich., on Feb. 8 for the GVSU BIG Meet will provide the last test prior to the 2013 BIG EAST Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships on Feb. 16-17 in Geneva, Ohio at the Spire Center.
"Two of our main weekends of focus during the indoor season will be at the Bill Bergan Invitational and Meyo with the strength of competition at those two meets," Rogers said. "We are going to Grand Valley this year instead of Indiana, as well as competing at an indoor meet at Illinois for the first time since I have been here. The conference meet is on an indoor 300-meter track at the Spire Center so our thought process behind going to Grand Valley was being able to compete on the same track the week before."
Senior Kyle Winter will look to defend his BIG EAST indoor title in the 800-meter run. Winter notched the first BIG EAST title for Marquette since the outdoor championships in 2008 and the first individual championship since Matt Piekarski captured the decathlon title in 2006.
The Golden Eagles close out the indoor season when they make their third and final trip to Notre Dame on March 1 to compete in the Alex Wilson Invitational.
Marquette will begin the outdoor season over spring break on March 14 at the USF Bulls Invitational in Tampa, Fla. This season marks the fourth year in a row that the Golden Eagles have opened their outdoor campaign at this event.
MU closes out the month of March when they compete in the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio on March 29-30.
The Golden Eagles host cross-town foe University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee April 5 at Valley Fields in dual meet competition. Last year the MU men's and women's teams swept their counterparts, with the women posting a 100-90 victory and the men winning 97-89.
Marquette will compete at the Lee Calhoun Invitational on April 12-13 in Macomb, Ill., where both the men's and women's teams claimed victories in 2012.
On the weekend of April 20 select runners, jumpers and sprinters will embark on a journey to the West Coast, competing in three events in the state of California. The Mt. SAC Relays, the Bryan Clay Invitational and the Long Beach Invitational are the three events MU will compete in in the Golden State. The remainder of the squad will compete at the Northern Illinois Invitational in DeKalb, Ill.
"We have had good success outdoors with that spring break trip and we want to do well there again," Rogers said. "Mt. SAC and BIG EAST meets are the others we have our sights set on during the outdoor season. With how we worked the schedule we tried to plan for the possibility of inclement weather in the Midwest."
Following the California trip, MU will host the Marquette Invitational at Valley Fields the weekend of April 26. The event will serve as a last chance to qualify for the 2013 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships at Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J., on May 3-5.
The Dr. Keeler Invitational, the Cardinal Twilight and the Gregory Invitational will provide the final opportunity for athletes looking to qualify for the NCAA Preliminary Rounds.
The West Preliminary Rounds of the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held in Austin, Texas on May 23-25.
